Elmer was found by a kindly gentleman that saw him wondering the streets (banging into fences and the side of Houses) in Dallas, TX. When Elmer came to me, his claws were sooo long and sharp, it’s as if he had NEVER walked on tarmac or a hard surface in his entire life, that coupled with his broke teeth – It’s scary to think – But I do wonder if he might have been in a cage or very closed quarters for an extended period, and used his teeth to gnaw his way out… I just can’t imagine a dog with such sharp nails (almost like a cats)… dogs can have long nails if not clipped, but Elmer’s were just long and sharp! Also, he’s definitely been a house dog at some point, he’s not scared of household items at all… My own Golden boy Brewster, was an outdoor dog before he came to me, even the squeeking of a door or timer of a microwave would freak him out – with Elmer I was vacuuming and he didn’t budge

Here’s what I know of Elmer thus far: Aside from the fact that he’s amazing!

Breed/mix – Hound/Mix Size: 55lbs Age: We think about 3 or 4yrs old
Location: He came from Waco, TX (North Dallas), he’s with me, Houston, TX
Teeth: Poor baby, his entire front row (upper/lower) teeth are really badly chipped/broken, the vet said he’s NOT in any pain (I think they started to break when his adult teeth were coming in, a result of him banging into things) He eats a healthy diet of mixed, dry/wet food and can chew on soft chews, so diet is not a problem (regarding his teeth)
UTD Vaccinations: HLP, Rabies, Parvo Corona
House trained – Yes and he uses a doggy door
Crate trained: He doesn’t like being in the crate, he doesn’t need it either, he just lies around and sleeps Great with other dogs, I have two Goldens and a Westie Mix
Cats: I have a declawed Cat, Elmer basically stalks her throughout the ‘entire’ house, when he reaches her, he just lies down, he shows absolutely no aggression toward her at all – At first I thought he was scared of her, now I think he’s either curious, or has been in a house with cats before… He’s barked a couple of times if she’s gone under the bed to hide, but that’s basically it – He just stalks and sits, but again no hackles, or growling …
Heartworm positive: He’s currently going thru heartworm treatment, he gets his 2nd shot on the 22nd Neutered: No, he’ll be neutered after his heartworm treatment
Leash Trained: Walks great on a leash (until he wants to change directions on you, he likes to walk close to you, almost rubbing against your leg as he walks… he really doesn’t like walking on grass, I still don’t understand it, he’ll hurry on to do his business then can’t get off the grass quick enough.
Clicker Training: I use a clicker to warn him that he’s coming up to a pathway obstruction, I also use the word – “CAREFULL” If I say careful, he immediately turns the other direction.
Commands: Come, Sit, Up, Down, Lie-Down: Bed, (working on: Stay, Step-Up, Step-Down), he now navigates stairs perfectly without my help.
